Tips&Tricks – Molar Mas Averages

Quantify and get more than Molar Mass Averages   Gel permeation chromatography/size-exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC) is used to determine molar mass averages and the complete molar mass distribution with just one injection. This is possible because GPC/SEC is a fractionating technique. The fractionation power allows the higher molar mass fraction to be characterized and more about low molar mass compounds such as oligomers, additives, or residual educts to be learned.   Article made by Daniela Held from PSS Polymer Standards Service GmbH

Tips & Tricks: How Broad is Broad for Macromolecules

GPC/SEC: How Broad is Broad for Macromolecules?

The vast majority of macromolecules exhibit a molar mass distribution that often described by the polydispersity index (PDI). This Tips & Tricks instalment offers pratical advice to consider when analyzing macromolecules using liquid chromatography (LC).   Article made by Daniela Held and W. Radke from PSS Polymer Standards Service GmbH

Tips & Tricks: Membrane Analysis

GPC/SEC for Membrane Analysis   Membranes play an important role in living species as well as in technical processes, including in human care (for example, in kidney treatment). This instalment of Tips & Tricks discusses gel permeation chromatography/size-exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC) for membrane analysis.   Article made by Daniela Held and Peter Kilz from PSS Polymer Standards Service GmbH

Snacks – Shelf Life Testing

Application to Snacks   snacks-billede-Sidebar   When creating a new recipe, industrials are highly preoccupied by the shelf life of their food products indeed, the product should not develop unwanted flavors upon ageing, so that the customer will not have a bad surprise when consuming the product.   During shelf life studies, the overall flavor must be reliable assessed and testing methods should allow to explain the possible causes of sensory defects. In this study, it is proposed to use HERACLES fast gas chromatography Electronic Nose to follow-up the organolepic profile of snacks over time and to assess the chemical changes that may affect the sensory quality.

Characterization of Pullulan

GPC/SEC Application note: Characterization of Pullulan   Pullulanes are polymeric dextrose units prepared by microorganisms. Pullulanes have strict linear chains and they are non ionic. This makes them perfect calibration standards for aqueous GPC/SEC systems.   Link to GPC/SEC columns

Multi Angle Light Scattering Photometer

For the chromatographic analysis of macromolecules in solutions light scattering (LS) has been used for about the past 20 years. The selection of a light-scattering instrument can be time-consuming due to the number of suppliers and measuring principles available in the market. A comparison of measuring principles of instrumentation is included to provide the reader with an experienced overview of methods, hopefully to ease the selection of light scattering detectors. Customer demands and laboratory requirements, specifically to meet the needs of biopolymer applications, calls for instrumentation, that provides high performance, reliable software, compact dimensions and of course attractive price.
